About
Jean-Philippe Urban is a robotics and computational neuroscience researcher whose work sits at the intersection of neural network architectures, visual servoing, and sensorimotor learning. Over more than a decade of sustained inquiry, Urban has made significant contributions to the challenge of enabling robotic systems to perceive and respond to their environments without requiring precise prior knowledge of kinematics or camera calibration—a problem of fundamental importance in adaptive robotics. His most influential early work, "Real-Time Visual Servoing Using Controlled Illumination" (1994, 22 citations), demonstrated how structured light and CCD camera systems could guide robotic end-effectors in real time. Urban subsequently turned to biologically inspired approaches, pioneering the use of self-organizing maps and modular neural architectures to model the visuo-motor correlations that underpin hand-eye coordination. His 1998 paper on learning with modular neural maps (22 citations) and later work on multiple self-organizing maps (2003, 15 citations) established a compelling framework for decomposing complex sensorimotor functions into learnable subcomponents. Across parallel and distributed processing platforms, including Transputer-based systems, Urban demonstrated both theoretical elegance and practical implementability. His body of work, accumulating over 115 citations, remains a thoughtful reference for researchers building adaptive, vision-guided robotic systems.
