About

James A. Eastham is a preeminent urologic oncologist whose career has been defined by his rigorous investigation of radical prostatectomy — both its oncological effectiveness and its impact on patients' quality of life. Working at the intersection of surgical technique, outcomes research, and evidence-based medicine, Eastham has made foundational contributions to our understanding of how prostate cancer surgery affects urinary and sexual function. His 1996 study identifying risk factors for post-prostatectomy urinary incontinence, now with over 530 citations, remains a landmark reference that continues to shape surgical planning and patient counseling decades later. Much of Eastham's most influential work emerged from a remarkable burst of productivity around 2011–2013, when he led or contributed to a series of systematic reviews and meta-analyses examining robot-assisted radical prostatectomy — covering perioperative complications (540 citations), potency outcomes (781 citations), surgical margin rates (417 citations), and pelvic lymph node dissection strategies. His involvement in the Pasadena Consensus Panel further cemented his role as a standard-setter in the field. Collectively, his top ten papers alone have accumulated over 3,700 citations, reflecting an extraordinary influence on how urologists worldwide approach prostate cancer surgery and measure its success.
