About
J. Zuhars is a pioneering figure in the field of surgical robotics, whose career has been defined by groundbreaking contributions to the development of image-directed robotic systems for orthopaedic surgery. Working at the intersection of robotics, medical imaging, and surgical precision, Zuhars played a central role in creating ROBODOC, one of the earliest and most influential surgical robot systems ever developed. His research focused primarily on cementless total hip arthroplasty (THA), where achieving precise implant fit is critical to long-term success through bone ingrowth. Zuhars and his collaborators demonstrated that robotic cavity preparation could achieve dimensional accuracy more than 50 times greater than traditional broaching techniques — a transformational advance for patient outcomes. His foundational papers, including the widely cited "An image-directed robotic system for precise orthopaedic surgery" (354 citations) and "Development of a Surgical Robot for Cementless Total Hip Arthroplasty" (347 citations), established core frameworks for CT-based preoperative planning and robotic surgical execution. His additional work on force sensing, safety architecture, and system integration further cemented his legacy, accumulating nearly 1,000 citations across his body of work and profoundly influencing the evolution of computer-assisted surgery.
