About
John P. Grotzinger is a pioneering sedimentary geologist and planetary scientist whose work has fundamentally reshaped our understanding of Mars' ancient habitability. His primary research areas include Martian sedimentology, stratigraphy, and the geological history of water on Mars. As the Project Scientist for NASA's Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission, Grotzinger led the Curiosity rover's groundbreaking exploration of Gale Crater, with his seminal 2012 paper on the MSL mission and science investigation accumulating over 816 citations. His team's discovery of evidence for plunging river plume deposits in the Murray formation (126 citations) provided compelling proof of ancient fluvial-lacustrine environments, directly addressing the question of past Martian habitability.
