J. B. Garvin is a leading planetary scientist whose research spans the geology and exploration of Mars, the Moon, and beyond. His major contributions include leadership roles on NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) and InSight missions, where he helped define the scientific and engineering frameworks for modern planetary exploration. Garvin’s most cited work, the 2007 LRO overview paper (401 citations), established the instrument suite and mission architecture that revolutionized our understanding of the Moon. His 2003 study of Martian impact craters using MOLA topography (129 citations) remains a foundational reference for deciphering crustal properties and erosion history on Mars.
