About
Ilya Kolb is a pioneering bioengineering researcher whose work sits at the intersection of neuroscience, robotics, and electrophysiology. His primary focus has been transforming patch-clamp recording — the gold standard technique for measuring electrical activity in individual neurons — from a painstaking manual process into a scalable, automated discipline. Kolb's landmark contributions include the development of pipette-cleaning methods that dramatically improve recording efficiency, and the creation of the "PatcherBot," a robotic system capable of performing whole-cell patch-clamp recordings on both adherent cells and brain slices with minimal human intervention. His autonomous in vivo patch-clamp robot, designed to characterize neurons in the mouse visual cortex, represents a significant leap forward in high-throughput neural phenotyping. Further extending this work, Kolb developed robotic navigation algorithms for accessing subcortical brain tissue and contributed a miniaturized microchip amplifier to simplify the hardware demands of patch-clamping.
