About
Ilia S. Zeltser is a pioneering urologic surgeon and researcher whose work has significantly advanced minimally invasive surgical techniques, particularly in the realms of laparoscopic and robotic-assisted procedures. His most impactful contribution is the development and validation of the **magnetic anchoring and guidance system (MAGS)** for single-port laparoscopy. In his landmark 2007 study, cited over 130 times, Zeltser demonstrated the feasibility of single-trocar laparoscopic nephrectomy in a porcine model using this novel platform, effectively reducing surgical incisions and paving the way for scarless surgery. This foundational work, along with his subsequent 2008 study, established him as a key innovator in magnetic-assisted surgery. Beyond this, Zeltser has made notable contributions to improving outcomes in robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy and cystectomy, investigating topics such as the impact of catheter materials on urethral strictures and the safety of tubeless ureteroenteric anastomoses. His recent work continues to refine surgical protocols, including the necessity of catheterization in Retzius-sparing approaches. With a career spanning from groundbreaking experimental models to contemporary clinical optimization, Zeltser’s research consistently seeks to reduce patient morbidity and enhance recovery.
