Ikuo Kitagishi is a pioneering researcher in human-robot interaction and physical communication media, best known for founding the concept of "MotionMedia"—a fifth communication medium alongside text, audio, images, and video. His work centers on enabling robots and software avatars to share physical motions across networks, fundamentally rethinking how machines convey and receive embodied information. Kitagishi’s most impactful contribution is the development of a Motion Data Description Language based on XML, which standardizes robot motion representation for ubiquitous network communication. He also introduced "Audio-MotionMedia," a novel technique embedding robot control signals directly into audio streams, allowing synchronized motion and sound for richer interaction.
