About
Hyunjung Shim’s research centers on computational imaging and 3D computer vision, with a particular focus on depth sensing technologies. Her most-cited work, “Skewed stereo time-of-flight camera for translucent object imaging” (2015, 16 citations), tackles the challenging problem of imaging translucent objects—a notoriously difficult task for conventional depth sensors. By introducing a skewed stereo time-of-flight configuration, Shim advanced the ability to capture accurate 3D geometry of materials that scatter light, opening new possibilities for applications in medical imaging and material science. Her earlier influential study, “Performance evaluation of time-of-flight and structured light depth sensors in radiometric/geometric variations” (2012, 7 citations), provides a systematic benchmark of popular depth cameras under varying conditions, offering critical insights that have guided researchers in robotics, gesture recognition, and 3D reconstruction. This work helped establish best practices for deploying depth sensors in real-world environments. Through these contributions, Shim has demonstrated a keen ability to both push the boundaries of sensor design and provide practical evaluations that support the broader computer vision community. Her research continues to shape how we capture and interpret the three-dimensional world.
