About

Heui Sug Jo is a South Korean health informatics and gerontechnology researcher whose work sits at the intersection of aging, cognitive health, and socially assistive robotics (SARs). Based at a institution serving the Chuncheon region, Jo has made meaningful contributions to understanding how ICT-based robotic companions can support the growing population of community-dwelling older adults, particularly those facing cognitive decline and social isolation. Jo's most recognized work evaluates the real-world effectiveness of companion robots such as the Hyodol SAR system, examining their impact on depression, cognitive functioning, and caregiver burden. A 2019 study (16 citations) was among the first to rigorously assess in-home robot care for elderly individuals, while subsequent randomized controlled trials explored how robots might alleviate the strain experienced by family caregivers of cognitively impaired older adults. More recently, Jo has expanded this research agenda to address chronic disease management, investigating how socially assistive robots can help older COPD patients monitor and respond to indoor air quality hazards. Collectively, Jo's body of work demonstrates a consistent commitment to translating emerging assistive technologies into practical, evidence-based tools that enhance elder care quality—an increasingly vital area as global populations age rapidly.
