About

Herong Wang is pioneering the integration of advanced tactile sensory systems with embodied intelligence for next-generation robotics. Her research focuses on developing multimodal tactile sensors that enable robots to perceive and manipulate objects with human-like dexterity. Wang’s key contributions include the creation of a multifunctional tactile sensory system that captures multidimensional force features—such as pressure, shear, and texture—allowing robots to intelligently identify and manipulate objects. This work, published in 2024, has already garnered 32 citations for its transformative potential in robotic perception. She further advanced the field with a highly resilient aerogel/sponge nested structure that supports multimodal tactile sensing, bridging the gap between physical interaction and large language models (LLMs) for embodied reasoning. This innovation, with 10 citations, addresses a critical limitation of LLMs—their passive information reception—by equipping robots with active, multi-feature perception of realistic objects. Wang’s research is at the forefront of merging soft robotics, materials science, and AI, promising to revolutionize how robots interact with their environment. Her work is essential reading for anyone interested in the future of intelligent robotic systems.
