About
Haruhito Azuma is a leading figure in Japanese urologic oncology, best known for advancing the surgical management of kidney and bladder cancers. His work centers on minimally invasive techniques, particularly robot-assisted surgery, where he has made landmark contributions. Azuma spearheaded the first large Japanese multicenter study on “trifecta” outcomes—a composite measure of cancer control, renal function preservation, and complication avoidance—after robot-assisted partial nephrectomy, demonstrating its safety and efficacy in a national cohort (52 citations). He also played a pivotal role in shaping national standards as a key author of the Japanese Urological Association’s 2019 Clinical Practice Guidelines for Bladder Cancer, a widely referenced document that guides evidence-based care across Japan (37 citations). More recently, his prospective multicenter study comparing robot-assisted to conventional laparoscopic partial nephrectomy for completely endophytic renal tumors has provided crucial data on functional outcomes and surgical superiority (5 citations). Through these efforts, Azuma has helped establish robotic surgery as a cornerstone of nephron-sparing treatment, influencing both clinical practice and policy in Japan and beyond.
