Dr. Junya Furukawa is a pioneering Japanese urologic surgeon whose work has fundamentally advanced the field of robotic-assisted surgery for kidney and prostate cancers. His research centers on refining surgical techniques to maximize oncologic control while minimizing patient morbidity. Dr. Furukawa is best known for his landmark contributions to robot-assisted partial nephrectomy (RAPN), where he has been instrumental in demonstrating the benefits of selective arterial clamping and real-time 3D image overlay navigation—innovations that help preserve renal function. His highly cited 2013 study comparing transperitoneal and retroperitoneal approaches (61 citations) established critical benchmarks for Japanese surgical practice.
