Hajime Sugai is an instrumental astronomer whose career has been defined by advancing the frontiers of observational astrophysics, particularly through the development of cutting-edge spectrographic and imaging technologies. His primary research areas include the physical conditions and kinematics of ionized gas in galaxies, as well as the design and construction of high-performance astronomical instruments. Sugai’s major contributions are most notably embodied in the Kyoto Tridimensional Spectrograph II (3DII), a pioneering multi-mode instrument that integrates integral field spectroscopy and Fabry-Perot imaging.
