Gaurav Sahay is a leading figure in nanomedicine, whose work has fundamentally reshaped how we design and deploy nanoparticles for intracellular drug and gene delivery. His research masterfully bridges materials science and cell biology, with a core focus on lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) for mRNA therapeutics and CRISPR-based gene editing. In a landmark 2011 study that has garnered over 200 citations, Sahay pioneered a combinatorial synthesis approach to create a library of 1,536 chemically diverse core-shell nanoparticles. This high-throughput platform, analogous to an assembly line, allowed his team to systematically deconstruct the complex relationships between nanoparticle structure and its ability to complex, internalize, and deliver cargo—a feat impossible with traditional one-off syntheses.
