About
Dr. Gang Chai is a pioneering force in craniofacial surgery, dedicated to merging robotics and augmented reality (AR) to revolutionize maxillofacial procedures. His research centers on developing intelligent, robotic-assisted systems for complex bone contouring surgeries, including mandibular angle split osteotomy and genioplasty. Dr. Chai’s major contributions include the design and clinical validation of a specialized maxillofacial surgical robotic system (MSRS) that integrates AR navigation and robot-assisted arms. This work addresses the critical challenge of limited visibility and precision in intraoral incisions, demonstrating that robotic assistance can surpass the accuracy of traditional, experience-dependent manual techniques. His landmark feasibility study (82 citations) and subsequent clinical animal experiments (48 citations) established the foundational safety and efficacy of this approach. Dr. Chai has further advanced the field through a prospective, randomized controlled trial (15 citations) comparing robotic to traditional mandibular contouring, providing early clinical evidence of long-term effectiveness. His research, which also explores electromagnetic navigation for confined surgical areas, has accumulated over 300 citations, positioning him as a leader in translating computer-assisted planning into tangible, high-precision surgical outcomes for Asian facial bone contouring.
