Frederik Wessels is a urological surgeon and clinical researcher whose work centers on improving surgical outcomes in prostate and kidney cancer care. His most impactful contribution is the landmark Phase 3 PELYCAN trial, which established the peritoneal flap technique as an evidence-based method for preventing symptomatic lymphoceles after robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy with lymph node dissection—a common and debilitating complication. This work, published in 2023, has already garnered significant attention in the field. Wessels has also pioneered a kidney-adjusted Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS®) protocol for partial nephrectomy, demonstrating that optimized perioperative fluid and blood pressure management can improve recovery in nephron-sparing surgery.
