Dr. Fei Chi Zhou is pioneering the emerging field of bio-inspired neuromorphic devices, with a particular focus on artificial nociceptors that mimic the human body’s pain-sensing systems. In her landmark 2022 work, “An Artificial Thermal Nociceptor Based on Xanthan Gum‐Gated Synaptic Transistors to Emulate Human Thermal Nociception,” Zhou introduced a novel device that replicates the biological threshold for thermal pain—responding only when temperatures exceed 45°C, the point at which humans perceive heat as potentially harmful.
