Federico Sabbadin is a structural biologist whose work illuminates the molecular machinery of environmental bioremediation. His research centers on the structural and functional characterization of unusual cytochrome P450 enzymes, with a particular focus on those capable of degrading recalcitrant pollutants. Sabbadin’s most notable contribution is the elucidation of the 1.5-Å crystal structure of XplA-heme, a remarkable cytochrome P450 heme domain that is naturally fused to its own flavodoxin redox partner—a unique structural organization. This groundbreaking work revealed how XplA, in concert with the reductase XplB, catalyzes the reductive breakdown of hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX), a toxic nitramine explosive and persistent environmental contaminant. By providing the first high-resolution view of this self-sufficient P450 system, Sabbadin’s research has not only advanced fundamental understanding of P450 structural biology but also opened new avenues for engineering enzymatic solutions for explosive waste remediation.
