F. B. Abdalla is a leading cosmologist whose work centers on dark energy, large-scale structure, and the development of next-generation spectroscopic instruments. A key contributor to the BigBOSS experiment (now DESI), Abdalla helped define a Stage IV ground-based dark energy survey designed to measure baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) and the growth of cosmic structure across 14,000 square degrees. This foundational work, cited over 80 times, has shaped the design of one of the most ambitious galaxy and quasar redshift surveys ever undertaken. Abdalla also played a central role in conceptualizing the Dark Energy Spectrometer (DESpec), a proposed multi-fiber spectroscopic upgrade for the Blanco 4-meter telescope. Leveraging the infrastructure of the Dark Energy Camera, DESpec would have deployed roughly 4,000 robotically positioned fibers to conduct wide-field spectroscopic follow-up. Abdalla’s contributions bridge observational cosmology and instrumental innovation, advancing our ability to map the universe’s expansion history and the nature of dark energy.
