Dr. Eul Sik Yoon is a pioneering reconstructive surgeon whose work centers on advancing minimally invasive techniques in autologous breast reconstruction. His primary research focus is the refinement and clinical application of robotic-assisted latissimus dorsi (LD) muscle flap surgery, a field in which he has established himself as a leading authority. Dr. Yoon’s major contribution is demonstrating the feasibility and reproducibility of a fully robotic approach to LD flap harvest, which dramatically reduces the traditional 15–45 cm posterior donor site scar to a few small incisions. His landmark study, "Ten-year experience of robotic latissimus muscle flap reconstructive surgery at a single institution" (2022), with 9 citations, provides the longest-term evidence to date that this technique yields consistent, excellent aesthetic outcomes with minimal donor-site morbidity. This work builds on his earlier foundational paper, "Robotic-assisted Latissimus Dorsi Muscle Flap for Autologous Breast Reconstruction" (2019), which first detailed the surgical methodology. By systematically proving that robotic assistance can eliminate the need for a long back scar—a major source of patient dissatisfaction—Dr. Yoon has transformed a workhorse reconstructive procedure into a truly scar-sparing option, directly improving quality of life for breast cancer survivors.
