About
Eben L. Rosenthal is a pioneering head and neck surgical oncologist whose career has fundamentally shaped the adoption and refinement of transoral robotic surgery (TORS) for cancers of the upper aerodigestive tract. Working primarily at academic medical centers including the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Rosenthal was among the earliest investigators to rigorously evaluate the feasibility, safety, and functional outcomes of robot-assisted resection for oropharyngeal and tongue cancers, with foundational studies from 2007 onward accumulating hundreds of citations. His prospective clinical trials and multi-institutional cohort studies — collectively cited over 800 times across his top publications — demonstrated that TORS offers comparable oncologic control to open surgery while meaningfully preserving swallowing and speech function. Rosenthal also made critical contributions to understanding surgical complications, including post-operative hemorrhage risk, and to salvage surgery for recurrent oropharyngeal cancer, a notoriously difficult clinical challenge. More recently, he has advanced the frontier of fluorescence-guided surgery, investigating panitumumab-IRDye800CW as a tumor-targeted imaging agent to overcome TORS's lack of tactile feedback. His body of work has directly influenced surgical practice guidelines and helped establish TORS as a standard-of-care option worldwide.
