Dr. Tamer Ghanem is a leading head and neck surgeon and researcher whose work has fundamentally advanced the field of transoral robotic surgery (TORS). His primary research focuses on applying robotic techniques to treat oropharyngeal and upper aerodigestive tract cancers, particularly in complex, recurrent settings. Dr. Ghanem’s most impactful contribution is his pioneering work on salvage surgery for recurrent oropharyngeal cancers, a landmark study (209 citations) that established TORS as a viable, organ-sparing option when other treatments have failed. He further shaped the field by leading the 2015 AHNS task force to create the first standardized recommendations for robotic surgery training and credentialing in otolaryngology (49 citations), a critical step for patient safety and procedural consistency.
