About
Dr. E. Colorado is a leading figure in astronomical instrumentation and robotic telescope operations, with a primary focus on enabling high-cadence, multi-wavelength observations of transient phenomena. Their most notable contribution is the successful automation of the 1.5-meter Harold Johnson telescope at the Observatorio Astronómico Nacional on Sierra de San Pedro Mártir, Mexico, specifically to support the Reionization And Transients Infra-Red (RATIR) camera. This work, detailed in their highly cited 2012 paper (50 citations), transformed a classical observatory into a fully robotic facility capable of rapid-response follow-up of gamma-ray bursts and other cosmic transients. By integrating sophisticated control systems, Colorado made it possible for RATIR to operate autonomously, dramatically increasing the telescope's scientific output and enabling real-time studies of the early universe and high-energy astrophysical events. This achievement has had a lasting impact on the field, providing a model for modernizing older telescopes for cutting-edge time-domain astronomy. Dr. Colorado’s expertise in bridging hardware and software for autonomous observatories continues to be a cornerstone of transient science in Mexico and beyond.
