About

Dominique Trudel is a leading figure in the field of biomedical optics, with a research focus on developing advanced optical spectroscopy and imaging systems for intraoperative cancer diagnosis. Her major contributions center on integrating real-time tissue characterization tools directly into surgical workflows, particularly for prostate cancer. Notably, she led the development of a Raman spectroscopy system that was integrated into a robotic-assisted surgical platform for use during radical prostatectomy procedures. This work, which has garnered 61 citations, aims to address the critical clinical problem of positive surgical margins, which occur in up to 20% of cases and are strongly linked to disease recurrence. Trudel has also pioneered multimodal optical systems that combine fluorescence, diffuse reflectance, and spatial frequency domain imaging to measure attenuation-corrected intrinsic tissue fluorescence. Her innovative approach to merging multiple spectroscopic techniques for wide-field, label-free tissue analysis represents a significant step toward providing surgeons with real-time feedback on tissue pathology, with the ultimate goal of improving surgical precision and patient outcomes in oncology.
