About
David Frisch is a pioneering figure in the development of foundational genomic resources for major agricultural species. His research centers on the construction and characterization of deep-coverage bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) libraries, a critical technology for positional cloning, structural genomics, and the identification of agronomically important genes. Frisch’s most impactful contribution is the creation of a BAC library for barley, which enabled the identification of clones containing putative resistance genes—a work that has garnered 206 citations. He also constructed the first BAC library for sugarcane (119 citations) and developed a deep-coverage library for maize, a crop with a notoriously complex 2,500 Mb genome. Beyond staple crops, Frisch expanded his expertise to the honey bee, building a BAC library and preliminary STC database to support structural genomics in this essential pollinator. His work has provided the scientific community with indispensable tools for genome mapping and gene discovery, making him a key contributor to the genomics revolution in both plant and insect biology.
