About
D. Mimoun is a leading figure in planetary seismology and instrumentation, whose work has fundamentally advanced our understanding of the interior structures of Mars and Venus. As a key architect of the SEIS (Seismic Experiment for Internal Structure) instrument on NASA’s InSight mission, Mimoun led the development of the six-axes Very Broad Band (VBB) seismometer, a feat of engineering that, after 42 years, finally delivered high-fidelity seismic data from the Red Planet. This landmark contribution, detailed in a 2019 paper with over 375 citations, has enabled the first direct measurements of marsquakes and the Martian crust, mantle, and core. Mimoun also played a pivotal role in the SuperCam instrument suite on the Perseverance rover, contributing to its body unit and combined system tests, a work cited over 320 times. Beyond Mars, Mimoun has probed the enigmatic interior of Venus and characterized the tilt and transfer function of the InSight lander, demonstrating a sustained commitment to unraveling the secrets of terrestrial planets.
