Christian Freksa is a pioneering figure in spatial cognition, whose work bridges artificial intelligence, cognitive science, and robotics. His research centers on how intelligent agents—whether human, animal, or machine—represent, reason about, and act within physical space. Freksa’s most influential contribution is his landmark 1997 paper on the roles of landmark, route, and survey knowledge in navigation, which has garnered over 125 citations and laid the groundwork for understanding spatial memory in both humans and robots.
