About
Chong Hui is a pioneering researcher in robotics, with a focus on energy-efficient motion planning and human-robot emotional interaction. Hui’s work addresses two critical challenges in autonomous systems: optimizing the energy consumption of mobile robots and enabling more natural, emotionally expressive communication between humans and machines. In their highly cited 2008 paper, “Minimum-Energy Motion Planning for Differential-Driven Wheeled Mobile Robots” (17 citations), Hui developed foundational algorithms that allow robots to plan paths that conserve battery life—a crucial contribution for long-duration missions in exploration, search and rescue, and service robotics. Hui’s 2009 study, “Sound Production for the Emotional Expression of Socially Interactive Robots” (11 citations), broke new ground by systematically linking basic emotions—happiness, sadness, and fear—to specific musical parameters such as mode, tempo, and pitch.
