About

Chengxia Wang is pioneering the next frontier of spinal surgery: autonomous robotic systems that go beyond screw placement to perform complex decompression procedures. Her research centers on the development and validation of AI-driven surgical robots for laminectomy and posterior decompression—critical interventions for spinal stenosis and nerve root compression. Wang’s landmark 2023 study introduced the first autonomous laminectomy robot, demonstrating its accuracy in thoracic and lumbar vertebrae (25 citations), while her 2024 work validated an AI-based system for autonomous planning and execution of spinal decompression in cadaveric models (7 citations). She has also investigated the thermal safety of ultrasonic osteotomes in robot-assisted laminectomy (5 citations), addressing a key clinical risk of heat-related injury. Most recently, Wang has explored robotic-assisted positioning for percutaneous endoscopic interlaminar discectomy (2025), expanding the role of robotics in minimally invasive spine surgery. Her work bridges mechanical engineering, artificial intelligence, and clinical neurosurgery, directly tackling the unmet need for reliable, safe robotic tools in spinal decompression. With a growing citation footprint and a clear translational focus, Wang is establishing herself as a leading innovator in autonomous surgical robotics.
