Che-Wei Liu is a roboticist whose work centers on mobile robot locomotion, particularly the challenging domain of stair navigation for erect wheel-legged service robots. His research integrates multisensor fusion, geometric modeling, and somatosensory control to enable robots to operate seamlessly in human environments. In his most-cited work (19 citations), Liu developed an online real-time system that combines a Kinect sensor with an inertial measurement unit (IMU) to recognize and measure stairs, using statistical analysis of 3D point cloud data and adjustable geometric models. This system was critical for enabling dynamic stair climbing. He later extended this work to address the equally difficult problem of descending stairs, achieving fully autonomous stair traversal.
