C. W. Haberle is a planetary scientist whose research bridges the gap between Earth’s most extreme environments and the search for life beyond our planet. Her work focuses on astrobiology, planetary exploration, and the characterization of habitable—and uninhabitable—environments on Mars and other celestial bodies. In her highly cited 2019 study (44 citations), Haberle revealed that low-diversity microbial communities inhabit extreme basaltic terrains and fumaroles on Earth, providing a critical analog for assessing microbial survival potential on Mars. This research directly informs NASA’s strategy for mapping habitable niches on the Red Planet. Haberle also contributed to the Planetary Lake Lander project, a pioneering field campaign that deployed and remotely operated a lake lander to simulate Titan exploration while studying the impacts of deglaciation on planetary lakes.
