About
C. M. Carollo is a leading figure in the development of next-generation astronomical instrumentation, with a primary focus on the design and construction of multi-object spectrographs for large ground-based telescopes. Their most significant contribution is their central role in the MOONS project—the Multi Object Optical and Near-infrared Spectrograph for the Very Large Telescope (VLT). Carollo’s work has been instrumental in advancing this powerful instrument, which uniquely combines the 8-meter collecting power of the VLT with the high multiplexing capability of 1,000 optical fibers. Their publications, including the highly cited 2018 paper “Rising MOONS,” document the instrument’s progression through critical milestones, such as the final design review and the start of construction. This work is enabling transformative surveys of the Milky Way and the distant universe. With over 19 combined citations on their MOONS-related papers, Carollo’s contributions are foundational to a facility that will provide unprecedented spectroscopic data for thousands of objects simultaneously, solidifying their reputation as a key architect of modern observational astronomy.
