About
Dr. C. Bollig is a leading figure in atmospheric remote sensing, with a primary focus on the development and application of LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology for aerosol and cloud profiling. Their most notable contribution is the pioneering work on the CSIR South Africa mobile LIDAR system, a state-of-the-art mobile observatory designed to characterize atmospheric composition in the Southern Hemisphere. In their landmark 2010 paper, which has garnered 13 citations, Dr. Bollig presented the first scientific results from this system, demonstrating its critical validation against satellite data, sun photometers, and model simulations. This work established a vital ground-truthing capability for space-borne sensors and significantly advanced our understanding of regional aerosol transport. By bridging the gap between local measurements and global models, Dr. Bollig’s research has provided essential data for climate and air quality studies, marking a key achievement in South African atmospheric science.
