About

C. A. Murray is an observational astronomer whose research centers on the detection of temperate, Earth-sized exoplanets orbiting ultracool dwarf stars — some of the smallest and coolest stellar objects in our galaxy. Murray has made significant contributions to the SPECULOOS project (Search for Habitable Planets EClipsing ULtra-cOOl Stars), a cutting-edge ground-based transit survey that deploys a global network of six 1-meter robotic telescopes to systematically monitor approximately 1,200 nearby ultracool dwarfs for planetary transits. Their most cited work, a 2020 paper outlining the SPECULOOS survey strategy and target list (105 citations), alongside foundational 2018 papers describing the telescope network (76 citations), helped establish the scientific and technical framework for the entire project. Murray has also contributed to characterizing observatory performance, including the SPECULOOS-Southern Observatory at ESO Paranal, Chile, and the Northern Observatory, extending the survey's sky coverage. A key motivation throughout Murray's work is identifying planetary systems suitable for atmospheric characterization with next-generation telescopes such as the James Webb Space Telescope, making their research directly relevant to the broader goal of finding potentially habitable worlds beyond our solar system.
