About
Basmah Bahbahani is a pioneering surgeon whose work is redefining the boundaries of global surgical care through ultra-long-distance telesurgery. Her research focuses on the clinical and technical feasibility of cross-border robotic surgery, with a particular emphasis on urological oncology and health equity. In her landmark 2025 study, she demonstrated the successful performance of a robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) between Asia and the Middle East on a patient with localized prostate cancer, achieving 20 citations for its proof-of-concept outcomes. Expanding on this, her subsequent work reported five successful telesurgeries across six months, using low-latency connectivity to perform multiple procedures on different patients—a milestone that earned 5 citations and underscored reproducibility. Bahbahani’s contributions are transformative: she has shown that distance need not be a barrier to high-quality surgical care, offering a pathway to global equity in surgical access. Her achievements highlight the potential of telesurgery to connect underserved regions with expert centers, making her a leading voice in the future of remote operative medicine.
