About

Dr. Barbara Mino is a leading cancer biologist whose work has fundamentally advanced our understanding of how to exploit cell division errors for therapy. Her research centers on the molecular mechanisms of anaphase catastrophe—a novel cell death pathway triggered by multipolar mitotic spindles—and the development of next-generation cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) inhibitors. In her landmark 2016 study, Dr. Mino demonstrated that the potent CDK2/9 inhibitor CCT68127 selectively induces anaphase catastrophe in lung cancer cells harboring supernumerary centrosomes, a common feature of aggressive tumors. This work, which has garnered 49 citations, established a critical proof-of-concept for targeting CDK2/9 to exploit centrosome amplification as an Achilles’ heel in cancer. By bridging fundamental cell cycle biology with translational drug development, Dr. Mino has illuminated a promising therapeutic strategy for lung cancer and other malignancies.
