Anthony Atala is a pioneering figure in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering, best known for his groundbreaking work in bioprinting and urologic reconstruction. His research centers on developing functional, lab-grown tissues and organs to replace damaged or diseased ones, with a particular focus on bladder, kidney, and cartilage repair. Atala’s major contributions include the first successful implantation of a lab-grown bladder into a human patient and the creation of the Integrated Tissue and Organ Printing System (ITOP), which enables the fabrication of 3D, vascularized tissues.
