Andy Adamatzky is a pioneering figure in unconventional computing, whose work blurs the boundaries between computer science, chemistry, and biology. His primary research areas include reaction-diffusion computing, cellular automata, and the use of excitable chemical media for information processing. Adamatzky is best known for demonstrating that the Belousov–Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction—a classic chemical oscillator—can serve as a functional computing substrate. In his highly cited 2004 paper (28 citations), he experimentally linked a BZ thin-layer reactor to a robotic hand, creating a closed-loop chemical controller that translated chemical wave patterns into physical actions. This work laid the foundation for his broader exploration of reaction-diffusion controllers for robots (2005).
