About

Al-Hafeez Dhalla is a leading innovator at the intersection of advanced optical imaging and biomedical instrumentation, with a primary focus on developing next-generation ophthalmic diagnostics and real-time 3D sensing. His work has fundamentally expanded the capabilities of optical coherence tomography (OCT) and frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) imaging. In a landmark 2022 paper, Dhalla demonstrated a real-time, wide-field spectral-scanning FMCW system that simultaneously generates high-resolution 3D depth maps (507 × 500 pixels) and velocimetry data at 33 Hz, achieving a 48° × 68° field of view—a breakthrough for dynamic scene capture and autonomous navigation. This work has garnered 12 citations for its technical novelty. More recently, his 2025 review charted new directions for ophthalmic OCT, detailing how handheld devices, surgical integration, and robotic assistance are transforming eye care from the clinic to the operating room, accumulating 9 citations for its forward-looking synthesis. By pushing the boundaries of imaging speed, field of view, and clinical utility, Dhalla is shaping the future of real-time 3D vision and precision medicine.
