Akira Tani’s research bridges two distinct yet impactful domains: the economic analysis of industrial robotics and the development of assistive medical technologies. His early work, including the widely cited “International comparisons of industrial robot penetration” (17 citations), established foundational insights into how enterprise size influences the adoption of industrial robots, using econometric models to quantify the gap between large and small firms. This line of inquiry, further explored in his 1987 paper on enterprise size, provided critical data for understanding technology diffusion in manufacturing. Later, Tani pivoted to a human-centered application of robotics, exemplified by his 2011 study on a robotic follower for home oxygen therapy (HOT) patients.
