About
Dr. Akina Kimura is a pioneering surgeon at the forefront of robotic colorectal surgery, whose work is defining the next generation of minimally invasive oncologic procedures. Her research centers on the clinical application and validation of advanced robotic systems—specifically the hinotori™ Surgical Robot System and the da Vinci Single-Port (SP) platform—for the treatment of colon and rectal cancers. Dr. Kimura’s major contributions include performing and reporting the world’s first low anterior resection for rectal cancer using the hinotori™ system, as well as the first right hemicolectomy for ascending colon cancer with this robot in Japan. She also achieved a national first by performing a right hemicolectomy with the da Vinci SP system. Her landmark case reports, which have garnered over 60 combined citations, provide critical early evidence on the feasibility, safety, and technical advantages of these novel platforms—such as the hinotori’s eight-axis arms and the SP’s single-site precision.
