Dr. Akhil Lawande is a pioneering Indian robotic surgeon whose work has significantly advanced the field of minimally invasive gynecologic oncology. His primary research focuses on developing and refining complex robotic procedures for advanced pelvic cancers, particularly in resource-constrained settings. Dr. Lawande’s major contributions include demonstrating the feasibility and safety of robotic anterior and total pelvic exenteration—ultra-radical surgeries for cancers involving the bladder and pelvic organs. His landmark 2014 paper, “Initial experience of robotic anterior pelvic exenteration at a single institute” (23 citations), provided crucial early evidence that these demanding procedures could be performed robotically with acceptable outcomes. He further expanded the field with his work on nerve-sparing robotic radical hysterectomy (2013), a technique aimed at preserving bladder and sexual function without compromising oncologic results.
