About
Dr. A. K. Shukla is a distinguished oceanographer whose research centers on satellite ocean color validation, marine optics, and the development of autonomous in-situ observing systems. His most significant contribution is the establishment and operationalization of a critical Ocean CAL-VAL (Calibration and Validation) site at Kavaratti in the Lakshadweep archipelago, a landmark achievement for India’s ocean remote sensing community. This deep-ocean, Case-I water site was specifically designed for the vicarious calibration of the Ocean Color Monitor-2 (OCM-2) sensor and the rigorous validation of its geophysical products. Dr. Shukla led the realization and deployment of a sophisticated pair of MET and OPTICAL buoys, integrating fully automated hyperspectral radiometers, fluorometers, and meteorological sensors. These systems enable preprogrammed, high-quality in-situ data collection and real-time transmission from a challenging deep-sea environment. This work, detailed in his highly cited 2013 paper, has provided an indispensable reference standard for ensuring the accuracy of ocean color data, directly supporting studies on phytoplankton, primary productivity, and marine ecosystem health. His efforts have cemented a vital infrastructure for India’s oceanographic research and satellite missions.
