Sustainable consumption refers to the use of goods and services in ways that meet present human needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, minimizing environmental impact, resource depletion, and waste across a product's full lifecycle. In robotics and AI, this concept drives the design of systems that extend product lifespans through automated disassembly, remanufacturing, and recycling — for example, robots equipped with metrics to assess disassembly ease can efficiently recover components for reuse, supported by digital product passports that track material histories. AI also enables smarter manufacturing by monitoring and reducing the externalities of industrial machinery over time, aligning Industry 4.0 technologies with sustainability goals. Beyond the factory floor, AI-powered virtual influencers and recommendation systems are being explored to shape consumer behavior toward greener choices. Sustainable consumption matters because manufacturing and consumer patterns are primary drivers of global resource use and emissions; integrating robotics and AI into circular economy strategies offers scalable tools for measurably reducing that footprint.
