A supraglottic airway (SGA) is a medical device or anatomical region positioned above the vocal cords (glottis) that enables airway management without requiring direct tracheal intubation. SGA devices — such as laryngeal mask airways — create a seal over the laryngeal inlet to maintain a patent breathing passage during sedation or general anesthesia. In robotics and AI contexts, SGAs appear prominently in two distinct applications: first, as airway management tools during robot-assisted surgical procedures, where maintaining a secure, unobtrusive airway is critical given limited patient access once robotic systems are engaged; and second, as the target anatomy in transoral robotic surgery (TORS), where robotic platforms enable minimally invasive resection of supraglottic structures affected by tumors or other pathology. SGAs matter because they reduce surgical trauma compared to open approaches, enable precise robotic instrument navigation in confined laryngeal spaces, and improve patient recovery outcomes. Understanding SGA anatomy and device behavior is essential for surgical teams deploying robotic platforms in head and neck procedures.
