About

Fernando Danelon Leonhardt is a pioneering head and neck surgeon whose work has fundamentally advanced the application of transoral robotic surgery (TORS) for complex aerodigestive tract tumors. His research focuses on minimally invasive surgical techniques, particularly for oropharyngeal carcinoma and parapharyngeal space tumors, with a strong emphasis on preserving patient quality of life. His landmark 2011 study on TORS for oropharyngeal carcinoma, cited 191 times, was among the first to rigorously demonstrate that robotic surgery could achieve excellent oncologic outcomes while significantly improving patient-reported swallowing and speech function compared to traditional open approaches. His 2010 investigation into TORS for parapharyngeal space tumors (148 citations) established critical safety parameters and surgical protocols for accessing these challenging anatomical regions. Leonhardt also contributed to the evolving understanding of HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer management, advocating for de-escalation strategies through minimally invasive techniques. As the author of the first Brazilian case report on transoral robotic supraglottic partial laryngectomy, he has been instrumental in bringing cutting-edge robotic surgical capabilities to South America, training a generation of surgeons in these advanced techniques.
