Sperm cells are the male reproductive cells (spermatozoa) that are central to fertilization, and they have become increasingly important subjects of study in robotics and biomedical engineering. In robotic and AI applications, sperm cells appear in two distinct contexts: as biological targets for automated micromanipulation, and as biological inspiration for designing self-propelled micro-robots. In assisted reproduction procedures such as intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), robotic systems must detect, track, select, and precisely handle individual sperm cells under microscopy, requiring advanced computer vision, force control, and manipulation algorithms. Simultaneously, the flagellar swimming mechanics of spermatozoa — their ability to propel themselves through viscous biological fluids — inspire the design of bio-inspired micro-robots capable of navigating confined environments for targeted drug delivery or minimally invasive diagnostics. Understanding and replicating sperm locomotion in non-Newtonian fluids like viscoelastic media is therefore a key research challenge. Together, these applications make sperm cells a uniquely valuable model system bridging reproductive medicine, microrobotics, and autonomous biomedical systems.
