About

Human–computer interaction (HCI) is the study and practice of designing, evaluating, and implementing interfaces and systems through which people communicate with computers and robotic systems. It encompasses the methods, tools, and principles that govern how users perceive, understand, and control computational and physical systems, including gesture recognition, natural language interfaces, haptic feedback, and brain–machine interfaces. In robotics and AI, HCI plays a critical role in enabling intuitive control of robotic manipulators, facilitating human–robot collaboration, supporting teleoperation, and allowing non-expert users to interact meaningfully with autonomous systems. Techniques from HCI inform the design of socially interactive robots, learning-from-demonstration frameworks, and interfaces that translate human intent into machine-executable commands. HCI matters because even the most sophisticated robotic or AI system is limited in practical value if humans cannot effectively direct, monitor, or trust it. As robots move into healthcare, manufacturing, and everyday environments, well-designed interaction paradigms become essential to safety, usability, and the broader adoption of intelligent systems.
