About

Yuhao Mao is a leading atmospheric scientist whose research focuses on the climatic impacts of light-absorbing carbonaceous aerosols, particularly black carbon (BC), in sensitive high-altitude regions. His seminal 2014 study on black carbon radiative forcing over the Tibetan Plateau stands as a cornerstone in the field, with over 130 citations. In this work, Mao combined a global chemical transport model with a stochastic snow model and radiative transfer model to estimate both snow albedo forcing and direct radiative forcing (DRF) of BC. He revealed that BC deposition reduces snow albedo, causing an annual mean forcing of 2.9 W m⁻² over the plateau—a significant driver of regional warming and glacier melt. More recently, in 2024, Mao extended his analysis to China, quantifying the direct radiative forcing of light-absorbing carbonaceous aerosols. His work is pivotal for understanding aerosol–climate interactions in cryospheric regions and informs policy on emission controls. Mao’s research bridges modeling and observational approaches, making him a key voice in the study of anthropogenic climate forcing in Asia.
